ACTINIC KERATOSIS

Actinic keratosis are common skin growths which often appear red, rough and scaly. These lesions are the result of years of sun exposure and are considered “precancerous” lesions that will develop into skin cancers over time. Ultraviolet light from the sun or indoor tanning beds causes these lesions. They typically develop on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, chest, scalp, hands and arms.

If left untreated, it will progress into skin cancers. Treatment options for actinic keratosis including “freezing” with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), prescription topical creams and photodynamic therapy (Levulan).
