Genital warts are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Genital warts are spread through sexual contact including sex and genital-to-genital contact. A person who does not see a wart can still spread HPV to others. Some HPV-infected people do not know that they carry the virus because they do not develop visible warts. Genital warts may not appear for weeks or months after sexual contact. Genital warts require treatment to reduce the risk of spreading and alleviate discomfort. Treatment options include excision, cryotherapy “freezing”, or electrodesiccation or laser treatments. The dermatology professionals at Modern Dermatology of KY can assess your skin lesions and discuss your treatment options.
