Herpes simplex virus causes blisters and sores around the mouth, genitals or other areas of the skin. Herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can be passed from person to person.

Fever blisters and cold sores are caused by herpes simplex type I and appear as tiny fluid-filled blisters around the mouth. These lesions are very common and are painful, tingle and burn. They appear suddenly. It often lasts 7-10 days before resolving. The sores occur 2-20 days after contact with infected person. People can have recurrence of these lesions in the same location or in a nearby site.

Herpes simplex virus type II results in blisters and sores on the buttocks, penis and vagina or cervix and can occur 2-20 days after contact with an infected person. Sexual contact is the most common means of acquiring this infection can also be acquired with nonsexual contact. Herpes simplex virus type 2 can cause problems such as rash, itching, painful blisters, fever, muscle aches and burning with urination. These lesions can be recurrent. It is thought that up to 20% of all sexually active adults are infected with herpes simplex type II in the United States.

Treatment options include prescription antiviral therapy to shorten the duration of this viral outbreak. To be most effective treatment needs to be begun early in the course of the disease.
