The medical term for shingles is herpes zoster. Anyone who has had chickenpox earlier in their life can develop a herpes zoster outbreak. Shingles normally manifests as a painful and tingling rash on one side of the body with small fluid-filled blisters on a red base. The area is very sensitive and will often itch or burn. Often the symptoms of tingling, itching or burning can appear a few days before the rash and blisters. Shingles outbreak generally last 2-3 weeks. Treatment for shingles includes antiviral medication and prescription pain relievers to ease discomfort and shorten duration of the outbreak. The earlier the treatment is started, the better. If not treated, the patient can develop severe pain called “postherpetic neuralgia” which can last 6-12 months. At Modern Dermatology of KY, we recommend that treatment begin within 24 hours.
